Flower Delivery to Gaulby with Clare Florist
Seven miles east of the city of Leicester, Gaulby is a village in East Leicestershire. Often times, it is called Galby and back in 2001, a census listed the village as having a population of 131.
History
The village was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Galbi, one of the 230 manors held by Hugh de Grandmesnil. He was born in Normandy but came over with William the Conqueror in 1066. As his reward, he was given lots of land in Leicestershire and even further afield.
By the 12th and 13th centuries, the manor was held by the Earls of Leicester with the last being John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster who died in 1399. The title Lord of the Manor passed on to the Marmion family then to the Haselwood family by marriage.
William Whalley, Lord of the Manor of King's Norton, Leicestershire, purchased the lands for £600 from the Haselwoods. When his descendant Bernard Whalley died in 1752, William Fortrey inherited the lands through his mother who was a Whalley.
Henry Green, the nephew of Fortrey, inherited the lands after his uncle's passing. By 1791, the lands were sold to Peers Anthony Keck of Stoughton Grange. The Keck family possessed the lands until 1913 when most of it were sold to the Co-Operative Society and the Wyggeston Hospital Charitable Trust.
