History
The name Ratby is taken from the Brittonic word for “ramparts” and the suffix -by is Old Norse for farmstead or settlement.
The Bury Camp located on the edge of Ratby is the oldest known human settlement in Ratby. It's an Iron Age encampment that dates back around 3,000 years. The Romans adapted this camp and used it as a fort temporarily.
Ratby has mostly been a small agricultural village with a couple of farms and the open three-field plan until its enclosure in the 18th century. Ratby was part of the hundred of Sparkenhoe from 1346 until the 19th century.
Residents of Ratby were mostly employed in frame-work knitting in the 1830s. The Earl of Stamford and Warrington was the chief landowner and he was also the lord of the manor and the patron of the vicarage.
