Flower Delivery to Leyland with Clare Florist
Leyland is a medium-sized town located in the southern part of Lancashire county, England, and is in the South Ribble District. The closest city is Preston, which is 10 kilmetres to the north. The town had a population of 35,600 people recorded for the 2011 Census. The word “Leyland” has Anglo-Saxon origins and means “untilled land”. The town is split into six different areas. The town centre is made up of retail stores where the railway line, library are located. Other areas in the town include Broadfield, Moss Side, Turpin Green, Wade Hall Estate, and Worden Park.
The town originally started with many fields and had Roman roads running through it. One road travelled from Wigan to Walton-le-Dale. After the Romans left, the land lay undisturbed for centuries. But after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, settlers started moving in. It has a mention in the Domesday Book of this time. It was King Edward the Confessor who presided over this region.
There used to be a manor in town that had three large ploughlands, each controlled by local noblemen. In the 12th century, it was managed by the barony of Penwortham.
St. Andrew’s Parish Church was built around 1200 AD. This is an active Anglican church on Worden Lane. The building is listed on the National Heritage Site for England as a Grade II listed building that was built in 1951. Within the churchyard are several war graves of service personnel from WWI and II.
On this land is the Leyland Cross, which is believed to date back to Saxon times.
There are about 47 listed buildings located in the town. These include churches, houses, farmhouses and buildings, schools, and more.
Leyland experienced major growth in the 20th and 21st centuries, due to industry and farming. Leyland Motors is a company employing many people to make buses and trucks. This manufacturer also makes BMC, and Rover vehicles, and is owned by Paccar.
Many people have also moved into the region over the past century or so, so there is a large residential neighbourhood composed of semi-detached, detached, and bungalow-type buildings. Most of the housing was built in the 70s.
The town still has a working railway station that runs on the West Coast Main Line that is operated by Northern. Trains run every hour between Liverpool Line Street and Preston Railway Station; and Manchester Victoria/Hazel to Blackpool North.
The Leyland Festival was held in June of this year at Worden Park for all ages. This year’s event included a car show, dog show, live performances, and a food court and fairground. This is the town’s biggest annual party.
