HISTORY

Bourne was an important junction in the Victorian railway system. However, this didn't last long as connections were severed after World War II. Because of the railway, major developments occurred in town. Many buildings were rebuilt or refaced and a bottled water industry developed. Coal deliveries for the gas works in town were also made.

Today, Bourne is a bustling market town offering lots of amenities, such as a leisure centre, outdoor swimming pool, snooker and sports bar, gyms, public houses, a fully-equipped theatre and a range of shops and businesses.

LANDMARKS

Bourne Abbey and Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul – a Grade I listed structure and the only one at that.

Red Hall – a Grade II listed property that is finished in red brick and features a Tuscan porch. It was the railway station booking office and waiting room for town from 1860 to 1959. Although it came close to being demolished, Bourne United Charities preserved the structure. Now, it serves as the office of the BUC.

Baldock's Mill – a former corn-grinding water mill. This along with the miller's house was converted by the Bourne Civic Society into the Heritage Centre of the town. Here, you will find lots of artefacts, and the most recent of which is the replica of a Charles Frederick Worth dress.

Baptist Church – established in the 1640s. This, along with the Methodist Church and United Reformed Church are still being used to this day.

Nearby

Bourne Wood – comprised of 400 acres of woodland. Now, it is home to a sculpture trail and is part of the 19-cycle Bourne Cycle Trail.
