Flower Delivery to Oxcombe, Lincolnshire with Clare Florist
When people talk about the UK, they usually think about London, Scotland, Ireland, Liverpool and other more popular destinations. What people in other parts of the world do not know is that UK has plenty of villages and parishes that are worth visiting, what with their offer of natural wonders and beautiful scenery, complete with an abundance of flowers. They may not always make it to casual conversations but they are still part of a historical and amazing nation. What is great about lesser-known locations is that they have a secret or two that is worth discovering. One of these is Oxcombe.
Does it not sound familiar? Well, how about Maidenwell, East Lindsey or Lincolnshire? Oxcombe is a small village associated with these places. It is 3 miles west from the A16 road, a principal road of Lincolnshire that connects the port of Grimsby and Peterborough, 6 miles south from Louth, a neighbouring market town and civil parish, and 6 miles north-east from Horncastle, another nearby market town, making Oxcombe fairly accessible from different directions.
During the 1870s, Oxcombe was a parish in its own right known for its natural beauty and flowers in Oxcombe. It is small in size in terms of land area, with a population of just 27 people and 4 houses. It is believed that the name of the parish has been derived from the Old English oxa+comb which translates to ox valley, but two other place names appeared according to John Bartholomew's a Gazetteer of the British Isles and John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales.
Today, the small village has a healthy population, providing its local residents a home and career options. However, based on a data provided by the Department for Work & Pensions, locals may be under employed or are earning a low salary. This is because the rate of people claiming benefits is 25% higher than the national average. Nonetheless, over 42% of the residents owned their own homes. 0.8% shares a property, while a total of 28% are distributed among social rented (council and housing association), private rented and those that are rent-free. In terms of education, a high number of residents either have qualifications that are equal to 1 or more GSCE at grade D, or none at all, based on the Census of 2011.
A prominent feature of Oxcombe is the All Saint's Church, a former parish church that is easily recognized by its imposing octagonal tower and grounds decked with Oxcombe flowers here and there. The original structure was pretty old based on the only two things that were left of it — a bell dated 1637 and a baptismal font dated 15th century. The present church and the tower were built in 1842.
Other places of interest, such as theme parks, museums, indoor play areas and swimming pools are found just a few minutes’ drive from Oxcombe. There is the Louth museum in Louth, The Bubblecar Museum in Boston, Donna Nook Nature Reserve in Louth, and the Billinghay Swimming Pool in Lincoln, among others.
