Flower Delivery to Merseyside with Clare Florist
Merseyside is one of the smallest counties in England, located central-north on the western side of the country. It was established in 1974. Despite its size, it has over 1.4 million residents. It’s surrounded by banks on two sides, including the Mersey Estuary from which it got its name. There are five metropolitan boroughs within: Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St. Helens, and Wirral. Merseyside covers over 645 square kilometres of land.
The county is compromised of urban cities, suburbs, and rural locations. Merseyside was formed from twenty-two former government districts.
The Liverpool City Centre is its largest business district, and also has the highest density in population.
It’s common for residents to say they live “on” Merseyside, rather than “in” Merseyside due to its situation on the river and sea.
Liverpool has the largest number of places of interest, including the Albert Dock, The Beatles Story Museum at Albert Dock, and the Liverpool Cathedral. There are also a large number of museums and art galleries located here.
Birkenhead Priory is located on Priory Street and is the oldest standing building in Merseyside. The priory’s tower still stands, with part of a wall remaining. It’s a Grade I listed building and a scheduled ancient monument. It was founded in 1150 by a Baron for the Benedictine Order.
Not much of Lydiate Hall remains either. One wall with windows of a brick structure are all that remain. It used to be a house with private chapel. Today it’s Grade II listed and with the grounds of Lydiate Hall Farm is a conservation area. St. Catherine’s Chapel in Lydiate is known locally as
Lydiate Abbey and was originally built in 1500. The chapel is in ruins with only three walls and a small tower remaining, with all of its windows missing, and is Grade II listed. In the summer time, markets are held on the Chapel grounds. People can purchase food, spices, and enjoy games and face painting.
Knowsley has the Safari Park that originally opened in 1971. There are large numbers of wild cats, moneys, giraffes, elephants, and more. Enclosures have been added in recent years to protect animals and vehicles. The park is also host to special events, including the Olympic Torch Relay in 2012.
Wirral Country Park is located right on the Wirral Peninsula, and was the first park of its designation in 1973. The park has two visitor centres and is located close to the Hadlow Road railway station. Its home to smaller wildlife like foxes and badgers, and plenty of birds and owls. Its popular for walking and hiking, with many clubs hosting regular walks in the region.
