Flower Delivery to Dalkeith, Midlothian with Clare Florist

Dalkeith is the largest town in Midlothian , Scotland that is often overlooked, probably because most people passing through it are set on reaching southern Scotland, instead of making a stop in this area. It also plays a role in the traffic build-up leading to Edinburgh, which is likely the reason that people just want to get out of there — fast. But if one will take the time to just stop and look around, Dalkeith will prove to be a charming place to be in.

Looking back...

The Chronicles of Jean Froissart is where the first historical references about Dalkeith was found. The medieval French author stayed in the town for fifteen days. In 1401, Dalkeith was granted a burgh of barony, and in 1540 a burgh of regality. Based from the Dalkeith Palace, the town's settlement grew south-westwards.

From just a town, Dalkeith became a market town in the 17th century when one of the largest markets in Scotland developed in High Street. Today, a lot of the establishments that played a role during its market-town heyday still stand, such as the Old Mealmarket Inn, Harrow Hotel, County Hotel and the Black Bull. All of which convey a rich history and depth of character.

It was in 1831 when the town was linked to Edinburgh by a railway that moved important goods, including agricultural products and coal.

The church underwent many changes and it now serves a modern purpose—“to serve the community in ways relevant to the 21st Century”, as stated in the church's official website.

It was the former seat of the Duke of Buccleuch, but is now leased to the University of Wisconsin for a study abroad programme. The palace is noted for its extensive grounds that features flowers in Dalkeith here and there.

Corn Exchange

Built in 1853, the Corn Exchange was the largest indoor grain market in Scotland at that time. It played a significant role in the history of Dalkeith, but was sadly left in disrepair. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the historic building is on its way to be preserved.
