Forres was home to a castle a thousand years ago. It was located in the west end of High Street. The castle was further strengthened in the 1100s to become a royal residence. Today, none of the castle exists and the site where it stood is now a public park.

Today, Forres still bears evidence of being a principle market town back in the day. Its early wealth is evidenced b the many attractive buildings found in the town centre including the 1828 toolboth and the mercat cross from 1844.
