Flower delivery to Hingham with Clare Florist

Located in the heart of Norfolk, the small but charming town of Hingham is the perfect point for exploring the many sights and attractions within and around the area. It is a former market town famous for its handsome Georgian homes and for being known as 'Little London' in the late Georgian period. Even if most of the Hingham residents work in Norwich today, the town has still maintained a strong base and has conserved its charm and character as a pretty representation of an English town, complete with independent shops, a school, church, post office, and lovely Georgian homes surrounding the old market place.

Its Early Days

The town is an ancient settlement and its history goes back to as early as 925 AD. It is recorded as the property of King Athelstan, who is the grandson of Alfred the Great. It kept many of its royal ownership privileges until the beginning of the 18th century. In that period, many socialites came to the town and built magnificent houses there, most of which can still be seen all over the main square. Its popularity among the London elite earned it the nickname Little London.

In the 17th century, the former Vicar of Hingham, Rober Peck, led a number of Puritan residents on a voyage overseas to the colony of Massachusetts. This group that left include individuals who had such active and significant roles in the local affairs that the village was devastated by their loss. One of these leading citizens was Samuel Lincoln, whose descendant was US President Abraham Lincoln. Another was Edward Gilman, ancestor of Nicholas Gilman who is one of the signatories to the US Constitution. The town sign in the market place shows some of the parishioners who left for the New World.

Its Famous Sights and Attractions

1. St. Andrew's Church – The town's beautiful medieval church dates back to the 14th century. It is where you can find a bronze bust of Abraham Lincoln, which was unveiled in 1919 by the American ambassador to Great Britain, Honorable John Davis. The structure is a lovely representation of Decorated Gothic style and towers over the market place so you can admire it's architecture from miles around.

2. Norwich – Drop by Hingham's neighbour and enjoy walking along the cobbled streets and museums, checking out the stalls at the large outdoor market, or satisfy your bibliophile cravings by dropping by The Forum which houses the Norwich Millennium Library.

3. Hingham Market Place – Stroll around the charming setting of this pretty English town as you imagine how it must have been like to wine and dine in Little London. Check out some of the remaining historical structures, such as the Admiral's House and Southernwood. Of course, don't forget to take a photo of the finest Georgian buildings found on the eastern side of the market.
