Flower Delivery to Little Hautbois — A Hamlet in Broadland, England
Little Hautbois is a small hamlet in the local government district of Broadland in Norfolk, England, and has been a part of the parish of Lamas since the 15th century. “Hautbois” is taken from the de Haut Bois family, who were the owners of the lands in ancient times, and this name gave rise to the settlement of Great Hautbois from which Little Hautbois got its name. Lamas Church contains a memorial that refers to Hautbois as “Hobbis”, which is how the name is pronounced by the locals.
Because of its peaceful and relaxing ambiance, Little Hautbois is a great holiday destination for those who want to escape the stress of daily life and just unwind with their family and friends. Read on to learn more about this hamlet.
The History of Little Hautbois
The de Haut Bois family acquired the lands in Great Hautbois and Little Hautbois during the Norman Conquest, and they were mentioned as the owners of the area in the Domesday Book in 1086. Little Hautbois had its own church, which was owned by St. Benet's Abbey, but it fell into disuse and eventually when the hamlet was united with the parish of Lamas in the 15th century.
In 1845, William White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory of Norfolk mentioned that the Rev. W. H. Marsh was the lord of the manor in Lamas and the patron of the Lamas and Little Hautbois rectories. The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales in 1870-72 also mentioned the hamlet, stating that it had six houses and a population of 25 at the time.
Little Hautbois in the Modern Times
Little Hautbois has retained its peaceful and relaxing ambiance over the years. If you decide to spend your family holiday here, make sure to visit some of the interesting attractions in the area. One of these is St. Mary's Church, which is said to be the site of a chapel and hospital that catered to travellers and was founded by the de Haut Bois family.
You can also check out Hautbois Hall, a manor house that's built according to the Tudor style, and the Adam and Eve, which used to be a public house but is now a private residence. Don't forget to explore the bridge over the River Bure; it's built over an older bridge that features two small niches, which could have been used by travellers as shelters or as hiding places for excise-men.
