Lynford is a small beautiful village located in the Breckland District of England in Norfolk. Lynford covers a total area of approximately 9.54 sq. mi and lies within the heart of England. Lynford lies 6.4 km’s north east of Brandon and between Mundford. Lynford lies between the forestry land of Breckland and is famous for its greenery and beautiful sceneries. Lynford is a relatively large parish in the Breckland district of Norfolk. The parish once contained four different villages Lynford, West Tofts, Santon and possibly Caldicote. The Lynford village is recorded in the Doomsday Book. The name Lynford comes from the masterpiece of literature ‘Old English’ and most probably means ‘Flax Ford’. There had been archaeological surveys made on the field area of Lynford. The available land was fieldwalked as part of the Stanford Training Area Survey (STANTA).
A possible Bronze Age burial was found in 1720 depicting that the settlement prevailed from the late medieval ages. This medieval village is a masterpiece and reflects the Old England in the most beautiful way. A wooden coffin containing human bones was also found in Breckland Archaeological Surveys. The Old Hall was built in 1500 and the second was established in 1720. Lynford has gained much popularity after the ownership of Lynford Hall changed in 2005.
One of the important landmarks of Lynford is the Lynford Hall. The house was built in 1857-1862. Lyford was gutted by fire in 1920 and the East wing of the building was burned completely. The forestry commission bought the hall and used it as a training institute till 1960. Later in 2005, the ownership changed and the Hall was converted into a wedding hall gaining popularity for Lynford.
Another famous building in Lynford is the tiny catholic church of Our Lady Consolation and St Stephen. This beautiful medieval chapel is stuck away in the woods in Lynford and was built by Mrs. Lyne Stephens in 1878.
