Flower Delivery to Coatbridge by Clare Florist
Coatbrige is a town that lies east of Glasgow in North Lanarkshire. It is set in the central Lowlands is a neighbour to Airdrie. It was a major centre for iron works and coal mining during the 19th century. Because of that, it was dubbed as “the industrial heartland of Scotland” and the “Iron Burgh.”
It also had a notorious reputation for air pollution and the worst excesses of industry. In the 1920s, coal seams were exhausted and the iron industry went into a rapid decline. When the Great Depression ended, the Gartsherrie ironwork was the last remaining of the iron works in town.
Today, Coatbridge is best known as a working class town that is anchored to Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland.
HISTORY
The earliest known settlement in town dates back to the Stone Age. However, the founding of the town can be traced back to the 12th century when the Monks of Newbattle Abbey were granted a Royal Charter by King Malcolm IV. Coatbridge along with its neighbour Airdrie forms the area known as Monklands.
The last years of the 18th century saw the development of Coatbridge from a loose collection of hamlets into a town. The growth of the town was attributed to the developments of the industrial revolution, in particular the hot blast process.
During the 19th century, Coatbridge became a major Scottish centre for iron works and coal mining.
In 1934, people left for Corby in England when the Union Plant relocated. This dealt a blow to the iron industry in the town and led the end of iron production. The town had a legacy of unemployment, appalling housing conditions, and overcrowding.
However, the biggest blow to the town occurred in the 1950s when the Clydeside shipbuilding industry went into a state of decline. This meant that there really wasn't going to be any more demand for iron.
There were state-sponsored programmes run in the 1930s and 1950s to improve the housing condition in the town. Since the 1970s, efforts have continued to improve Coatsbridge into the glory it once was.
