Flower Delivery to Culworth with Clare Florist
The civil parish and village where a third-century Roman coin was found, Culworth is definitely worth a visit. Located north of Brackley in South Northamptonshire and northeast of the north Oxfordshire town of Banbury by 7 miles each, it is easily accessible.
As it stands on the brow of a hill, 160m above sea level, reaching the place would be quite the trip. This is especially true with flowers in Culworth decorating your path and the rest of nature giving you a warm welcome.
Up top, you get to watch the view over almost three counties and more Culworth flowers in and around the area.
Brief History of Culworth
The village was born when Iron Age settlers recognised the area’s good defensive position. A motte and bailey were built in the early 12th century alongside Welsh Way, an ancient trackway.
It once served as a base of the Culworth Gang, notoriously known for terrorising villagers and other people within thirty miles. Their named lived on long after they were arrested and tried at Northampton. But their namesake has none of the old gang’s notoriety.
Interesting Facts about Culworth
The Drovers' Routes
Although the routes have become obsolete now that railways are the preferred choice of transport, these used to be an important trail for drovers taking cattle to markets and fattening pastures.
The Welsh Lane is the most important since it leads to the Cotswolds to Northampton where the most important cattle area is found.
Wallace Arthur Sabin
He may not be world-renowned, but this Culworth-born composer is famous in America as a teacher, organist, composer, and designer of organs. He made his name in San Francisco and was highly in-demand as a soloist.
Market Cross and The Green
The market cross may no longer exists today but evidence showed it was quite a big affair in the past. 1264 marked the year when the first charter for a market and fair was granted. Weekly events were held where people in the mediaeval times bought and sold goods. Larger fairs are held once or twice a year.
Today, only a war memorial marks the spot where the market steps are believed to have been built. The Green, on the other hand, is nothing more than an irregular shape open space.
Culworth Stone
There are two types of stone available in Culworth – ironstone and limestone that is light coloured. These were used to build houses, whether as the main material or a combination of both.
Although there are no stone quarries in the area, evidence showed that there is enough stone supply to build houses, including The Manor, the Culworth House, and the Fairway Cottage.
Churches and Chapels
As one of the few Moravian bases, Culworth still has a Moravian church and chapel and The Baptist Chapel, which is fondly remembered for beautiful harvest festivals.
