Flower Delivery to Easton Maudit with Clare Florist
Easton Maudit is a tiny village located in Northamptonshire, located in the East Midlands region of England. There is some notable history in this region, and this civil parish has the Easton Maudit Church. Maudit is a variation of Mauduit. The village was named after the Mauduit family. It sits about thirteen kilometres east of Northampton town centre.
There was an existing estate on site that the Mauduit family purchased in 1131. Back then the village was just called Easton. Eventually Maudit was added to the village name, for its influential family.
The first residential landowner was Sir Christopher Yelverton, who purchased the village in 1578. He was an English judge and speaker in the House of Commons. There is a monument dedicated to him at the Easton Maudit church, and is the main monument there. He is depicted in his robes. Sir Yelverton is also known for writing the prayer that is still said daily in the Parliament today. Yelverton had six children, one of whom was named Henry, who became the attorney-general to King James 1.
Thomas Percy became the rector of the parish in 1753. He was a good friend of Samuel Johnson, who was infamous for writing the first “Dictionary of the English Language”. Samuel Johnson often visited the rectory, along with Oliver Goldsmith, novelist and poet; and David Garrick, playwright, and founder of the Garrick Club. Another notable resident was Derek Nimmo, a famous actor from the 1960s who is now buried in the village.
Easton Maudit Church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. The church contains a motto from the Marquesses of Northampton—William Parr—who was brother to Catherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s wives. There are the remains of a large old oak tree that has been carefully tended on the church site, and its shell is now artificially supported.
The town once had a manor house, but it has long since been demolished, possibly in the 1800s, and never replaced. Sitting in its spot are the Lebanon cedars, a beautiful grove of trees that originally descended from Lebanon. At some point in Roman times, the trees were planted in Easton Maudit.
In the past there were many attempts at preserving these trees in their originating country. The Roman Emperor Hadrian issued decrees to protect them. In 1876, Queen Victoria financed a wall to protect them in Bsharri.
Many Roman remains have been found in the village. The Romano-British Villa possibly contained several connected buildings, where many fine artifacts, including mosaics, pottery, games, and glassware have been recently found.
