Flower Delivery to Gretton with Clare Florist
Gretton is a peaceful and beautiful village in Northamptonshire, near the Rockingham Motor Speedway and around 9 kilometres north-east of the town of Corby. Located in the Rockingham Forest, it overlooks the county of Rutland as well as the River Welland valley and contains the main village as well as Cotton, a former farmstead, and Kirby, a deserted village. Gretton covers more than 1,500 hectares and has a population of 1,285 people as of 2011.
It might not be as popular as other places in Northamptonshire, but Gretton is a destination of its own. It’s home to The Hatton Arms, which is the second-oldest pub that’s still operating in Northamptonshire, and it has the tallest church tower in the county. It’s also an excellent place to visit if you want to escape the city and relax in a tranquil village atmosphere.
A Look at Gretton’s Past
Archaeological experts have discovered evidence proving that there has been human activity in Gretton since prehistoric times. Late Iron Age pottery have been found in a ditch that revealed during an ironstone mining operation in the 1960s. Iron currency bars that date from the Iron Age have also been discovered, as well as pottery, kilns, roofing tile fragments, and other items from the Roman times.
Gretton was mentioned in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, which was published in the 1870s. In the publication, John Marius Wilson described Gretton as a village and parish that covered almost 4,500 acres and was a part of the district of Uppingham. At the time, the area had 196 houses and a population of 909 people, with its own national school as well as a Baptist chapel.
Gretton Today
One of the best things about Gretton is that it has successfully retained much of its historical buildings, which makes it a great place to visit if you love history and culture. You’ll want to explore St. James Church — its main body was built in the 11th century and its tower was added in the 15th century — as well as the Baptist Church, which was consecrated in the 1800s.
The Hatton Arms, which was constructed in the latter part of the 1500s, is also worth the visit. Don’t forget to see the Stonycroft and the Old Vicarage, which date back to the 17th century, as well as the Old School House, which was built in 1853.
If you visit the area during spring, make sure to spend some time at Gretton Paddock Park. Here, you’ll get to enjoy the beauty of Gretton flowers and observe butterflies and insects in their natural habitat. If you have kids, they’ll have a lot of fun in the natural play area for children and will want to explore the large grassland area.
