Alnmouth is located about five miles east of Alnwick. Given its very scenic nature, you can never go wrong about spending a romantic getaway here. Just buy some Alnmouth flowers, present it to your partner and let the scenery do everything else.

HISTORY

It is believed that The Venerable Bede used the words Adtwifyrdi or Adtuifyrdi – which means at the two fords – to describe the meeting of the river and tributary at the mouth of the River Aln in Alnmouth.

It was during the time Queen Elizabeth when Alnmouth was taken and fortified by the French, according to the Encyclopædia Metropolitana.

American privateer John Paul Jones launched a cannonball at the town during the American War of Independence. Luckily, it missed the church tower and landed in a field, but it did strike the roof of a farmhouse.

In 1860, the village was chosen as one of the fourteen weather stations. It was equipped with a barometer by the Duke of Northumberland who was acting as president of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

THINGS TO DO

Beach

Heading southwards from this beach leads you to the estuary, which is the mouth of the River Aln.

Other beaches include the one south of the estuary which is harder to get to, but is popular with locals and dog walkers. Another beach is the one that leads north from Alnmouth headed to Boulmer, a fishing village.
