Flower Delivery to Holystone — A Small and Peaceful Village in Northumberland

Holystone is a small, idyllic village in the foothills of the Cheviot Hills. A part of Northumberland, it's located on the northern bank of the River Coquet and lies just within the Northumberland National Park. It might not seem much at first glance but, if you're looking for a place where you can relax and unwind, this quiet hamlet is the perfect choice for you.

The History of Holystone

Holystone has been around since the Roman era; people most likely settled in it because of the abundant water supply provided by two wells in its vicinity. One of these wells, the Lady's Well, is located beside what used to be a busy Roman road that ran from Redesdale to the coast. Because of its location, the well gave weary travellers access to drinking water. Legends say that the Anglo Saxon Saint Ninian had baptised many Christians in the well's waters, which is why it was also called St. Ninian's Well.

An Augustinian priory was built in Holystone in the 12th century, although there are those who say it was earlier than that. The nuns who lived here probably were the reason why St. Ninian's Well became known the Lady's Well (“lady” referring to the nuns). The priory became influential over the years, although its wealth eventually declined and it became dissolved in 1536. Its buildings were demolished in 1541.

Holystone was a part of the turbulent Middle March in the 16th century and did not have the protection of the “king's peace”, which meant that it was always targeted by vicious border raiders and had gone through violent times. Things improved in the 19th century, during which it had a population of almost 200 people and had its own school and doctor.

Holystone Today

Holystone has become a haven for those who want to get away from the tourist crowds. So, if you and your family and/or friends want to relax and surround yourselves in peace and quiet, you won't go wrong with spending your holiday in this quiet village.

During your stay in Holystone, take the time to explore the local attractions and enjoy their beauty. Head off to the Lady's Well to marvel at its beautiful and sometimes eerie atmosphere and relax under the grove of trees that surround it. Make sure to read the plaques in the area to learn more about the history of Lady's Well. You can also take walks through the forest to breathe in the fresh air, enjoy the Holystone flowers and other plants, and see interesting sights like Dove's Crag and the Fairy Well.

Of course, if you're spending your holiday with your loved ones, you can look for ways to make your trip more special and meaningful.
