HISTORY

Due to its location on the Anglo-Scottish border, many battles were fought on the soil of Northumberland. It was once part of the Roman Empire and features more castles than any other county in England – Alnwick, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Newcastle and Warkworth.

Present-day Northumberland was once the core of the Anglian kingdom of Bernicia, which together with Deira  formed the kingdom of Northumbria in the 7th century.

Northumberland is also called the “cradle of Christianity” in England as it was here where Christianity flourished – on the tidal island of Lindisfarne on the north of Bamburgh or also known as Holy Island.

The county is also known in history for several uprisings against the government, one example being the Rising of the North (1569-1570) against Elizabeth I of England. The Percy family, who were Earls of Northumberland, usually led the revolts.

The Earls of Northumberland wielded much power in English affairs as they are tasked with protecting England against Scottish invasion.

The industrial revolution saw Northumberland be a major contributor thanks to the many coal mines operating in the county. Other important industries were shipbuilding and armaments before de-industrialisation in the 1980s.

Northumberland still largely remains rural to this day. It's also the least-densely populated county in England. But thanks to its scenic beauty and historical significance, the county has experienced quite a considerable growth in tourism.
