The town is located 11 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne, a city more commonly known as Newcastle and is home to Newcastle Brown Ale, the Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Each year, flowers in Prudhoe are displayed in an event called Prudhoe in Bloom. The competition has been going on since 2005 and by 2007 it expanded to include churches and schools. The 2015 contest added a theme of environmental responsibility where additional points were given to those with garden entries that include bird feeders, a compost bin or a pond. Every time the contest is held, it manages to bring in spectators who like to see a display of Prudhoe flowers.
HISTORY
A former mining community and castle town, Prudhoe is now one of the largest towns in west Northumberland. Although there have been debates about the name and origin of the town, it's believed that the name means “Proud Heights” owing to the town's location on a hill.
Place name expert Allen Mawer, however, states that Prudhoe's name is most likely derived from Prudah Hoh, an Anglian/Northern English word meaning Pruda's Heel. Pruda in this sense is a personal name most likely belonging to a local Anglian chief while heel refers to the spur of land where the castle stands.
Not much is known about the medieval history of Prudhoe but the castle (Prudhoe Castle) was built by the Normans. The castle was also the stronghold of the Percy family during the Middle Ages and it is linked to the border wars.
Prudhoe experienced significant expansion in the 19th century due to industrial expansion, particularly mining and brick manufacturing. To this day, Prudhoe still maintains its manufacturing roots but mostly it serves as a commuter town for the nearby city of Newcastle.
