Flower Delivery to Southampton with Clare Florist
Southampton is the name of a large city, port, and unitary authority area in the county of Hampshire, in the southern part of England. It’s a 121 kilometre drive to London, and 31 kilometres to Portsmouth. It’s located at the junction of the Rivers Test and Itchen, and still remains one of the most important ports in the country, including a home for luxury cruise ships. The docks also employ a large number of the population. This city has a population of over 253,651 people.
This is one of the most populous regions in the UK. The name is often abbreviated to “So’ton” or “Soton”. People who live in Southampton are called Sotonians.
Southampton is close to the New Forest. This is a wide expanse of pastures and heathlands that are not fenced in. This region covers the southwestern side of Hampshire and into the southeastern part of Wiltshire to Dorset.
There has been archaeological evidence that dates back to the stone age. After the Roman invasion in AD 43 to 70, Clausentum, a fortress settlement was built within a defensive wall, also containing a bathhouse. This became an important trading port. It was abandoned around 410.
During the time of the Anglo-Saxons, a newer and larger settlement was built across the Itchen on what is now called St. Mary’s. This old settlement was called Hamwic, before its name evolved into Hampton. This site has some of the best Saxon artifacts found in all of Europe, and is how the county of Hampshire got its name.
Due to Viking raids, Hamwic declined in the 9th century. In the 10th century, a new fortified settlement was built, which then became the medieval version of Southampton. By 1066, Southhampton was a major port of transit for goods between England, Winchester, and Normandy.
The Southampton Castle was built in the 12th century. It suffered extensive damage throughout the years, until most of the site was flattened in the 19th century. Today, there are only a few castle remains left, including a few merchant houses. Southampton does still contain a large number of surviving medieval walls when compared to the rest of England.
Southampton has many museums, including the Tudor House Museum, God’s House Tower, Southampton Marine Museum, and Solent Sky.
Southampton Common is a region of large open grassy space located north of the city centre. It’s a site designated as special scientific interest. This is where the annual festivals and community events are held, including the flower festival (now on hiatus), FestivALL 2017 held in Mayflower Park, circuses, and fun fairs.
