Flower Delivery to Bramford with Clare Florist
Bramford is a medium-sized village located in Suffolk, on the south eastern side of England, and it has about 2500 residents. It’s west of Ipswich, and considered to be part of the mid-Suffolk administrative district. The River Gipping flows past the bottom of the village, and is the source of the River Orwell. This was a busy waterway during the 19th century. A river lock is still located on the east side. The nearest villages are Little Blakenham, Somersham, and Sproughton.
There has been some archaeological evidence found that indicates there used to be a Roman settlement here.
During the time of Edward the Confessor, from 1042 to 1066, the land had been held by Stigand, an Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of a manor.
Bramford has been listed at “Brunfort” and “Branfort” in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then there was a large community with three manors, two churches, and two mills.
There have also been other records that note the village as being spelled as “Braumfforde”, and “Braunford”. The name could have meant that there was a ford near the brambles. Some historians also think that the village may have been named for a Dane called Braun who moved there.
In 1596 the Acton family bought land in the village. They were originally from Ipswich and involved in the clothing trade. The family added to their estate for the next 200 years. They built Bramford Hall during the 17th century. Eventually their estate passed into the Broke and Loraine families through marriage. They owned the hall until it was demolished in 1956.
There are still some farmhouses that date back four hundred or five hundred years. One of the oldest buildings is on the 6-10 The Street and used to be the Bell Inn.
Like many villages in England, Bramford used to have a railway station on the Eastern Union Railway, but this was shut down in 1955.
There are two churches in the village. St. Mary the Virgin is an Anglican church that can be viewed from the Bramford Bridge, and is located on the southeastern side of the village. It’s believed it was built on the ground of an old pagan site of worship. There used to be another church dedicated to St. Albert, but that is long gone. There is also a Methodist church in the northwest side of Bramford, on the B1067 road.
There are several amenities in the village, including shops and service-oriented businesses. The village has one primary school. There is also a private care village named Cherryfields that has several bungalows and flats on Gippingstone Road.
There is a sporting ground where the village’s clubs can play, including a football club with first and reserve team.
