HISTORY
Called Wrancham, Wrantham and Wrettingham in the past, Wrentham was mentioned in the Domesday Book as being owned by William de Warrens of Varennes, one of the great knights of William the Conqueror. He fought at the Battle of Hastings, and since he was involved in the invasion plans, he was given 300 manors. Half of those were in Suffolk and Norfolk and included Wrentham, Benacre and Henstead.
William de Warrens was later created Earl of Surrey and he built a castle in Holt, Norfolk and founded Lewes Priory in Sussex. He mostly lived at the castle in Lewes and when he died in battle in 1089, the Wrentham parish was divided into six manors.
Centuries after the Norman Conquest, the manors were substantially developed, Perpounds in particular which was South of Wrentham Hall and Poinings, which was North Hall.
The tenant in chief of the Manors of Wrentham, known as South Hall and North Hall, were the Valences family (Earls of Peinbroke). Under them, the lands were held by the families Pierrepoint and Poynings. These families along with their descendants continued to hold the manors just prior to the reign of Queen Elizabeth. From then, it passed to the Brewster family.
Humphrey Brewster was the first lord of the Manor who actually lived in Wrentham. In 1550, he built Wrentham Hall to the north-east of the church on a farm known as Blackmoor Farm. The last Brewster died in 1797 and by 1810 the lands were purchased by Sir Thomas Goch. The hall was demolished and its contents were sold at auction.
