Flower Delivery to Surrey with Clare Florist

A county located in the south-east of England, Surrey has just the right activities for you whether you're visiting for business or leisure. It's a place you'd love to visit with your family or with friends, whether on a day trip or a weekend getaway.

HISTORY

The Atrebates tribe occupied Surrey before the arrival of the Romans. They were centred at Calleva Atrebatum, which is the modern county of Hampshire. They controlled the southern portion of the Thames.

When King Cunobelinus died about AD 42, war broke out between them and the powerful Catuvellauni tribe located on the north bank of the Thames. The Atrebates lost the fight and had their lands captured.

The Saxons conquered and settled Surrey between the 5th and 6th centuries. Scandinavian Vikings attacked most of England during the 9th century, but the inland position of Surrey protected it from coastal raids.

The Norman Conquest of England in 1066 saw Surrey fall. The Normans built several castles, one of which was Guildford Castle.

When the Tudor kings came into power, gargantuan palaces were built to the north part of Surrey.

The 18th century saw Surrey become more modernised as communications improved and a rise of London's influence was seen.

Surrey's paper and gunpowder manufacturing industries collapsed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, Surrey is a popular area for homeowners who commute to London on a regular basis.
