HISTORY
In the Domesday Book of 1086, Dorking appears as the Manor of Dorchinges. It was hailed by William the Conqueror. Among its assets were: one church, three mills, 16 ploughs, three acres of meadow, woodland, and herbage.
The Dukes of Norfolk were the subsequent Lords of the Manor and they lived in town until they moved to Arundel. One of these lords is even buried in a Dorking churchyard.
During the medieval period, Dorking was a prosperous agricultural and market town. It was able to capitalise on its position on the junction of a number of long distance roads and local tracks, as well as milling and brewing, surrounding cultivated fields and pasture.
The construction of a turnpike road transformed Dorking into a staging post on the rote to Brighton and the coast.
Dorking also held a big wheat and cattle market in the High Street. The South Street around Butter Hill was the site of the poultry market, and one of the most famous products was Dorking fowl which was a favourite at the table of Queen Victoria.
When the railways arrived, Dorking lost its stagecoaches, but attracted a number of wealthy residents. The town was an urban district from 1894 to 1974.
