These vibrant and yellow Mayford flowers are said to where the name of the village came from.

Perhaps you are visiting over the weekend and stay at the lovely home of a friend who lives in the village. Why not express your gratitude and send flowers to Mayford a day before you arrive? It would be the sweetest gesture to show how happy and excited you are to find out more about this delightful place.

History

There have been speculations as to where the name ‘Mayford’ originated from. Some of the locals say that it came from the ford that used to cross the Hoe stream and where Hawthorn trees used to grow despite the surroundings being damped areas. The closest explanation, though, is that the name means a ford where mayweed abounds since these daisies used to grow along river banks.

Residents formed a Mayford Village Society in 1990 to address the concerns and listen to the views of the members of the community particularly on the Green Belt. This piece of land on the area kept citizens concerned as the Woking Borough Council plans to develop some parts for housing and other developments.

Landmarks

Mayford Pond Heritage

There are many pounds in the borough but this one, situated opposite the Mayford Centre had existed since the 1920s. Over the years, it disappeared from the map but was restored and created in 1997. It was included in one of the 10 villages to participate in the bid to rebuild lost village ponds. Now, residents, visitors and local wildlife can enjoy the calm and serenity the pond has to offer.

Hoe Valley Linear Park

This park runs for two and a half miles covering the areas of Hoe Bridge and Mayford Bridge. It is beautiful and forested part of the county, a great place to unwind and enjoy recreational activities. Enjoy a perfect afternoon strolling along its pathway, close to nature.

Worplesdon Railway Station

Located between Mayford and Worplesdon, this railway station is proximal to Hoe Valley Linear Park. It started operations in 1883, that time, surrounded by open farm lands. With the developments around it over the years, the surrounding area is filled with low density housing. The station is managed by South West Trains and their ticketing office is opened from Monday-Friday.

War Memorial in WokingTown Square

Another sight to see is a memorial built for fallen soldiers during World War I, from 1914 to 1919. The monument has inscriptions of the names of the brave soldiers who lost their lives and on top is a winged-creature, likened to an angel with open arms.
