Flower Delivery to Parkmill, Gower Peninsula with Clare Florist

Parkmill is a village located in the far southern reaches of Wales on the Gower Peninsula. Its name in Welsh is “Melin y Parc”. It’s located halfway between Ilston and Penmaen, and thirteen kilometres west of Swansea. It’s close to the northern coast of the Bristol Channel. The A4118 is the closest road into town, with the main South Gower road between Swansea and Port Eynon. The village lies close to a wooded region, at the bottom of a valley.

Samuel Lewis described in his “A Topographical Dictionary of Wales”, 1849, about much of the village. He called it a hamlet, and that it was the most populus village in the parish. It was extremely rural, and the surrounding scenery was “characterized by features of tranquility and seclusion”. A small rivulet called Pennarth Pill wound through a dell. There were ruins of an old chapel and a cloth manufactory from the 12th century, that had a water-powered corn and saw mill.

Today, the cloth manufactory has been renovated. It is now the Gower Heritage Crafts Centre. Originally, the smallest cinema in Wales was in this village. It had seats for 23 people, and was built from a small railway carriage. After the owner passed away, the cinema was closed due to safety issues. Since then, the new cinema now exists in the Gower Heritage Crafts Centre.

About one kilometre from Parkmill is the Parc Cwm long cairn, a prehistoric burial chamber. It has been partially restored. It was built during the early Neolithic period, the New Stone age, about 10,200 years B.C. It’s located on floor of a dry valley. It’s currently managed by Forest Enterprise.

Parkmill has several amenities in town to keep people active. An old school at the centre of town is now the Girl Guides Activity Centre. There is also the Pennard golf course that is south of the village.

Parkmill has only one church in town. The Mount Pisgah United Reformed Church, that has a Congregational chapel. This was originally built in 1822, then rebuilt in 1890.

The Parc le Breos was a medieval park established between 1221 to 1232 by John de Braos, the Marcher Lord of Gower. It was an enclosed area of 2000 acres/800 hectares, and had a large deer population. In the 14th century the park got its income from agistment—sales from pastures, pannage—allowing pigs to forage on the land, wild honey, ferns, sales of dead wood, and rabbits.

Today, the Park le Breos is mainly farmland. It has a 19th century hunting lodge which has been converted to a hotel. Visitors can enjoy pony trekking on the land.
