Flower Delivery to North Shields with Clare Florist
North Shields is a large town located on the north bank of the River Tyne, in the metro county of Tyne and Wear, on the upper northwestern coastline of England. This town has almost 50,000 residents. It’s close to Newcastle upon Tyne, at 13 kilometres away.
In history, North Shields was considered part of Northumberland, which is the county just above Tyne and Wear. The words North Shields are from the middle English word “schele” which means “temporary sheds or huts” in reference to the tiny buildings that fishermen used when fishing. Shieling is a Scottish Gaelic word for “a collection of huts”. This region of England is still a popular location for fishing and seafaring trades.
The first record of North Shields dates back to 1225. This was the official record of the Prior of Tynemouth, Germanus, noting the start of the fishing port at the mouth of the River Tyne. The quays were also a popular spot to ship coal from. Around this time, the town grew to 1000 people.
Lighthouses were an important part of seafaring trade, as there were many dangerous black midden rocks for ships to be wary of. In the 16th century, the first lighthouses were built in the port. They had permanently burning lights that would guide the mariners.
A map found of the River Tyne from 1655 actually details high and low lights. These buildings were basically square castellated towers. Both of these light towers were rebuilt in 1727, and the buildings can still be seen today as tall white structures on the coastline. Newer high and low lights were installed on the bank in 1810. Most of these structures are now residences and businesses.
New Quay is a rectangular-shaped building still standing at three stories tall, built by the Duke of Northumberland in 1806.
The town has the Wet ’n’ Wild indoor water park for year round swimming and games, and is located on the Royal Quays development. It also has many rides and slides.
North Shields is easily walkable, and has the Beacon, a shopping mall, located in the middle of town. The town also has three other shopping centres, and many shops and stores.
There are over fifteen churches in the town, including the Christ Church on Preston Road, and St. Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Church on Albion Road West.
The Mouth of the Tyne Festival is held every year in July, and features popular musical guests, evening concerts, street entertainment, and a school pageant.
