Flower Delivery to Addiewell with Clare Florist

Addiewell's past lies in it being a former mining village. Located in the Scottish council area of West Lothian, this village is home to the HMP Addiewell – a prison that holds adult males who have been convicted, as well as those who are being held on remand – which opened in 2008.

HISTORY

Addiewell is a town created to house the workforce of Addiewell Chemical Works. It was intended to be exclusively for oil workers. The staff employed by James Young – a chemist – in his mines was housed at Happy Land and other settlements.

James Young left Manchester to return to Scotland in 1852. When he came back, he bought the patent for the production of paraffin oil by distillation of coal, which is known as the oil shale industry. Young bought out his business partners at the Bathgate-based chemical works when the patent expired in 1864.

By 1865, Young built a larger factory located in Addiewell as it was located on the Breich river. He purchased 70 acres of land and developed a model village for his workers.

Many of the streets of Addiewell are named after inventors and public figures during the Victorian period. Here are some of the street names:

Livingstone Street – named after David Livingstone. Had about 98 homes in two-storey terraced blocks.

Watt Street – named after James Watt and contained around 36 homes in two-storey terraced blocks.

Stephenson Street – named after Robert Stephenson where it contained 24 homes in two-storey blocks.

Simpson Street – comprised of 18 single-storey, single-apartment back-to-back homes on either side of the street.

Faraday Place – named after Michael Faraday. Comprised of a row of 13 homes for foremen, mostly with three apartments and a substantial garden.
