Linlithgow Palace

Although all that remains are ruins of the original structure, Linlithgow Palace can still take your breath away. Set in a park beside a loch, it’s undeniably a sight to behold. Exploring the grounds will take you to the magnificent great hall that, although roofless, still showcases the very reason why the palace makes a great impression then and now. Other features to note include the oriels, the fountain that resembles a 3-tiered wedding cake, and several sculptures. Set in the midst of a cluster of flowers in West Lothian, the stone-carved figures certainly presents an awe-inspiring display.

Cairnpapple Hills

Throughout its existence since 3000 BC, Cairnpapple Hills have been used in a variety of ways. It was first a ceremonial site, later became a Bronze-Age burial site, and then a unique holy place. Although devoid of West Lothian flowers, its vast stretch of green can still take your breath away. And, since the summit lies 312 m above sea level, it gives you a stunning view of central Scotland. On a good day, you can also see as far as Goat Fell and Aran. Other features on the hills include the henge monument, which is a classic example of a Neolithic ceremonial monument and the concrete dome where death and burial practices of the Bronze Age are shown.

Polkemmet Country Park

The park was developed on the estate of Polkemmet House, which was demolished during the 1960s. It was in 1978 when the estate was bought by West Lothian District Council, and in 1981 was opened to the public. The park sits on the upper part of the River Almond that rises near Hearthill and then courses through the park. Most of the park is occupied by a golf course and driving range, while the rest is occupied by various walking and picnic facilities. An extensive collection of trees with different species adds to the allure of the country park as a walking destination.

Apart from well-maintained grounds, another notable feature is “The Horn”, a 24-metre high sculpture at the north-east corner. When it’s windy, The Horn plays music, poetry and quotes.
