Situated south of Kingswinford and north of Stoubridge in the West Midlands, Wordsley is known to be a centre of arts and music as well as the home to the Dudley Music Centre. This village was also the birthplace of professional snooker player Ronnie O’ Sullivan and poet Gary Bills. If you happen to be visiting the town to watch a theatre performance with your wife for your anniversary, perhaps, you might want to look for flowers in Wordsley to give her after the show. But if you will be pressed for time, there is no need to fret. You can just send flowers to Wordsley by ordering online. And to have an idea of what to expect when you get to Wordsley, here are some pieces of information you will find interesting.

History

The name of the township is of Early English (Anglo-Saxon) origin and has two elements: Worda and leah. The former is a personal name that is masculine and the latter is defined as a wooded estate. During the 13th century, the village was used to graze and house carthorses and the population only increased by the 16th century. When glass makers came to live in the village in the early years of the 17th century, glass making became the town’s major industry.

Places of Interest

Red House Cone

This 90-foot conical brick structure is an interesting artwork in itself because of its shape. It has a diameter of 60 feet and was used to manufacture glass up until 1936. Among the four cone structures in the United Kingdom, this is considered to be well-kept and preserved. Today, it functions as a museum where visitors can watch glass blowing demonstrations and visit craft shops. This structure lies on a 1-acre land and was said to have been built around 1790 by Richard Bradley, the then owner who was a rich glass manufacturer.

Holy Trinity Church

Located just off High Street, this church was built in 1831 as a replacement for Kingswinford St. Mary. It was designed by Lewis Vulliamy and the land was donated by the Earl of Dudley. It was reopened in 1846 as a chapel of ease.

Wordsley Hospital

Built as a workhouse in 1903, this hospital was completely closed in 2005. However, it was sold to be developed as a housing unit and the clock tower was retained because it was a listed building. If you visit Wordsley, this structure is still an interesting sight to see.

Wordsley is an interesting town if you are looking forward to spend a quiet, romantic weekend and watch a theatre performance. But before you head off to your weekend getaway, do not forget to send flowers to Wordsley to surprise your loved one.
