Flower Delivery to Aberford with Clare Florist
Aberford is a large village of 1200 people, located in the West Yorkshire county, in the upper northwestern region of England. It’s also a civil parish and is located on the eastern side of the City of Leeds metro borough in the county. It’s nineteen kilometres from Leeds and share the LS25 postcode. The Cock Beck stream flows through the village.
This village has always been considered the halfway point for travellers between London and Edinburgh. Each of these cities lies about 320 kilometres from the centre of Aberford, and situated on the old Great North Road. This used to be the main highway between London and Edinburgh. It was eventually replaced by the A1 bypass.
Aberford has a history dating back to the Middle Ages and was a part of the Kingdom of Elmet, an independent Brittonic kingdom. Aberford has an Anglo-Saxon origin, which could mean “Eadburgh’s ford”. Likely the old settlement used to have a strategic importance.
The Battle of Towton, 1461, is one of the wars fought during the Wars of the Roses, and occurred near the Cock Beck stream. This was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the War, with over 28,000 soldiers dying.
The Aberford Dykes are also located in the valley where the Cock Beck flows through. The Dykes are a series of archeological defensive monuments on the north of the village. The most notable is the Becca Banks or the Ridge, that runs for five kilometres along the north side of the valley. Parts of it are a bank with a ditch with a natural scarp of stone. The Aberford Dykes were not built all at once. They have origins in the Iron Age, Roman times, and medieval times.
Local industry included the production of pins. The village has experienced most of its growth along the road, so it has a linear grouping of buildings. The village has continued to grow with expansion from the 1990s, and has attracted many people who wish to get away from big city centres to move out to rural and suburban regions.
There are many items of historical note in the village. The Swan Hotel and Arabian Horse Inn were notable stage coach stops for travellers between London and Edinburgh.
In 1870, an Anglo-Saxon gold ring was found in a ploughed field. It was engraved with the name of AEthelswith, the sister of King Alfred the Great. A.W. Franks, considered the second founder of the British Museum, donated the ring to the museum in 1897.
Aberford House has some buried remains of a Roman fort beneath its foundations.
The village has the Church of England Aberford Parish Church, with a long tall tower and pointed summit. It is connected to the St. Ricarius Parish Church building beside it.
