Flower Delivery to Etchilhampton with Clare Florist
Etchilhampton is a very small village located in the central part of Wiltshire county and in the southwestern portion of England. It’s also considered a civil parish with an elected parish council, and is 4.8 kilometres east of Devizes, a market town of 11,715 people.
The village began with a street called Devizes-Upavon, with houses along both sides, and a church at the centre. The road had some steep gradients along the way. In 1768 a new road was built on the southern slope of Etchilhampton Hill, which is now called the A342, and was built on a flatter strip of land. A few years after the road was built, a stone plinth with a seated lion was built near this spot. It was built for the memory of James Long of Wedhampton, one of the men who had encouraged the building of the new road.
In 1831, the village got its first school. The school underwent a rebuild in 1875. The school was for children of all ages. It eventually closed in 1929, and the older students had to go to school at Devizes. It eventually shut down completely in 1970.
In 1086, the Domesday Book listed only twenty-eight small households here. The village was held by Edward of Salisbury, who was a courtier and a nobleman. He was part Anglo-Saxon, and served as the High Sheriff of Wiltshire from the reigns of William I, II, and Henry I.
In 1195, the ownership of the manor passed to the Malwain family, and to the Ernle family in 1489. One of the popular Ernle descendants along the Wiltshire Branch was Sir Edward Ernle who lived from 1673 to 1729. He was a member of Parliament. The manor passed through ownership by inheritance until it was finally sold in 1928.
St. Andrew’s Church is located within Etchilhampton . This small church has a small green grass graveyard and was first built in the 14th century. A 12th century font was moved here after building. Other furnishings were added later, including 17th century box pews, and a chancel rebuild in the 1860s.
In the early 16th century, Manor Farmhouse was built. This is a timber- framed building of two storeys. Today, it is a Grade II listed building.
In the 18th century Etchilhampton House was built. This is a two storey and three bay house that was built with brick and stone.
By 1885 all the homes had deteriorated, so they turned that end of street into a footpath. The village became split into two separate settlements after this time. The population was at its height in the mid-19th century with over 282 residents on the 1841 census. By 1881 the population dropped to 170. Today, there are about 143 residents living here.
The village has also been known as Ashlington, and this name was commonly used until the 19th century.
