Flower delivery to Wilton with Clare Florist
With a rich history that dates back to the time of the Anglo-Saxons, Wilton gave its name to Wiltshire, as well as the very well-known Wilton Carpets which are still made in town to this day.
History
Wilton was the capital of Wiltshire, which was a shire of the Kingdom of Wessex during the Anglo-Saxon occupation.
The founding of Wilton Abbey in AD 771, as well as other establishments, made the town of Wilton of significant importance to the church.
The town was also the site of an important battle that was fought between Alfred the Great and the Danish armies in AD 871 where the former lost and went into retreat for a number of years.
Although the town was constantly attacked, it remained a prosperous one. However, the construction of the Salisbury Cathedral nearby led to its decline.
In 1539, Wilton Abbey was surrendered to Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. By 1541, much of it was granted to the Earl of Pembroke and became the site of Wilton House.
Weaving and the carpet industry became large trades in town.
